Every morning, Hester Aske unlocks a cold stone room at the back of an old house in the Fens and checks a slate shelf. Some mornings there's something on it: a wedding ring, a pair of ballet shoes, a train timetable with one line underlined. Each comes from a life that nearly happened and didn't. For 178 years the Museum of Almost has kept them all, under one rule: nothing that arrives belongs to anyone who might yet claim it.

Then, one Tuesday in October, a house key arrives. It's brass, worn smooth, with a numbered tag and a loop of faded red wool. When Hester holds it she sees a yellow kitchen, hears a weir outside the window and a child's laughter, and she knows it is the life she walked away from seventeen years ago.

To prove it she will break every rule she has kept, and the truth she finds is stranger and more tender than anything she imagined.

Luminous, bittersweet and quietly magical, The Museum of Almost is a novel about regret, the lives we carry, and the courage it takes to put them down.
