The sleeper beneath the stone

When a summer storm tears open the hillside above Vellacroft, twelve-year-old Mara Calloway finds something that shouldn't exist: a cave that wasn't there yesterday. She texts her three closest friends — practical Denny, fearless Priya, and quiet, watchful Joel — and they go down into the dark together.

What they find beneath the limestone is a ship. Ancient beyond calculation. Still running. And not empty.

Over the next six years, the four of them will carry a secret that reshapes everything they thought they understood about time, intelligence, and what it means to be known by something that has been alone for a million years. They will learn to communicate with a consciousness so vast and so patient that human language can only approximate the edges of it. They will watch the world change around them — and change themselves — as a discovery meant for governments and scientists remains, for as long as they can hold it, simply theirs.

The Sleeper Beneath the Stone is a novel about first contact as an act of friendship. About the particular courage of young people who don't yet know what they're supposed to find impossible. About what happens when four ordinary children become the most important people on Earth — and choose, over and over, to be worthy of it.

For readers of Patrick Ness, Frances Hardinge, and Andy Weir.
